Two Fatal Accidents Occur on Same Day in Southwest Georgia

GEORGIA – October 3, 2018 ( Two fatal traffic crashes occurred in the same day in southwest Georgia, according to an online news report from*

The first occurred at approximately 11:53 a.m. on October 2. Kenneth Scarborough, 62, of Columbus, Georgia, was driving a 1999 GMC Sierra northbound on Ga. 91 in Donalsonville. Near the area of Grady Cobb Road and the Miller County line, Scarborough crossed the centerline of the roadway and crashed into a southbound 2019 Kia Soul head-on. 

Scarborough died at the scene. The driver of the Kia, 74-year-old Paul Dukes, of Damascus, Georgia, also died at the scene. A passenger in the Kia, 75-year-old Annie Price, of Colquitt, Georgia, was airlifted to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. She died of her injuries later that day. 

The second fatal accident occurred on Ga. 309 North, near Bainbridge in Decatur County, Georgia. From photos at the scene, it appears a vehicle collided with a piece of farm equipment. One fatality was reported, but no additional details about this accident have been released at this time. 

Decatur County is located on the southwestern border of the state of Georgia. It has an estimated populated of 27,000, and its major roadways include U.S. Route 27 and U.S. Route 84. Aside from 2016, vehicle accident numbers in Decatur County have remained relatively steady, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. 

From 2012 to 2015, an average of 575 accidents occurred annually in Decatur County. In 2016, however, accident totals jumped to 682. The vehicle accidents in 2016 led to almost 200 injuries and 12 fatalities.
