Semi-Truck Driver Arrested in Georgia After Hitting Man on Scooter and Leaving Scene

October 06, 2018

GARDEN CITY, GA. – October 3, 2018 (wtoc.com) A semi-truck driver has been arrested and charged after hitting and killing a man on a scooter October 3 in Garden City, Georgia. The story is reported online at wtoc.com.*

At approximately 9 a.m. on October 3, 65-year-old Ronald Robinson, of Garden City, was riding a scooter on Highway 25 in Garden City. Near the SunTrust Bank, a semi-truck struck him. Robinson tragically died of his injuries. A witness told Georgia State Patrol Troopers that the semi-truck pushed Robinson and the scooter down the street and then drove away.

Troopers released a photo of the truck (assumedly captured from surveillance near the scene of the accident), and Georgia Port Authority identified the semi near gate 2 on River Street. The Port Authority matched the damage on the truck to the damage described by Troopers and called Georgia State Patrol. Around 1 p.m., authorities arrested the driver of the truck, 71-year-old Jerry Corl, of North Carolina, and booked him into the Chatham County Detention Center.

Corl was charged with hit-and-run causing death, homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene, and following too closely. He was arraigned in a Garden City Court the same day as the accident, during which the judge overseeing the case denied Corl bond. He is being held in jail at this time, awaiting his next court date, which is scheduled for October 10.

The incident is still under investigation, and no additional information has been released at this time. The cause of the accident is still not clear. Main Street in Garden City was reportedly closed near Coastal Road and Brampton Road as authorities responded to the scene the morning of October 3.
