Longtime Georgia Truck Driver Killed in Indiana Crash

October 02, 2018

CLARK COUNTY, IN. – September 28, 2018 (13wmaz.com) A longtime truck driver from Georgia died September 27 in a collision on Interstate 65 in Indiana, according to an online news story from 13wmaz.com. He had just celebrated his 65th birthday days earlier.*

Gainesville, Georgia, trucker Roger Cole turned 65 September 21 and celebrated a life full of family and friends and working at a job he loved. Cole had been driving a commercial truck for Pilgrim Trucking Company of Cleveland, Georgia, for 10 years. Cole’s wife, Angelia, said he had no plans of retiring because he loved the road and felt like the people at Pilgrim were a second family.

The week of September 24, Cole delivered a load from Atlanta, Georgia, to Ohio, then drove his 1999 International semi-tractor to Indiana, just north of Louisville, Kentucky, to pick up another load that was bound for Atlanta. On September 27, Cole was entering Interstate 65 South from Interstate 265 West, when the weight of his load shifted. His tractor-trailer reportedly overturned on the interstate ramp, and he was killed in the collision.

Investigators in Clark County, Indiana, are working to determine what happened. Reports indicate Cole was carrying two steel coils, which would have placed the truck’s total weight close to its maximum capacity of 80,000 pounds. Lawrence Pilgrim, owner of Pilgrim Trucking, said Cole was a “good man, a good trucker” and said he had been in touch with Indiana State Police and was waiting to hear more about the circumstances of the accident.

Angelia Cole remembers her husband of 15 years as a “very happy and spontaneous person and a loving person.” Cole’s son Josh Cole, who spent some of his childhood summers going on cross-country adventures with his dad, described Cole as an “interstate angel.”

“If he saw somebody broken down, he would stop and help them if he could,” Josh Cole said.
