Man Dies After Crashing Vehicle into Stalled Dump Truck on I-85 in Georgia

October 02, 2018

BARROW COUNTY, GA. – October 1, 2018 ( A man from Cumming, Georgia, tragically died September 28 after crashing his vehicle into a stalled dump truck on Interstate 85 in Barrow County, Georgia.*

Shortly before 11:30 p.m. on September 28, Micah Marshall, of Cumming, was driving a Mini Cooper southbound on I-85 in the left lane. About one mile north of the Ga. 211/Old Winder Highway exit in Barrow County, Marshall crashed into the back of dump truck that was stalled in the southbound left lane of the interstate. Georgia State Patrol says the dump truck had slowed for construction traffic, then came to a stop.

“For unknown reasons, the dump truck became disabled, and the driver of the dump truck placed emergency warning triangles behind his vehicle,” said Cpl. Luke E Mize, Assistant Post Commander with the Georgia State Patrol.

Marshall did not slow or change lanes in time to avoid the truck in his path and rear-ended it. He died of his injuries. The driver of the dump truck, Donald Tolbert, of Dawsonville, Georgia, was not inside the truck at the time of the crash and was not injured. It is not yet clear why Marshall did not see the truck in front of him. Georgia State Patrol is investigating and has not released any additional information at this time.

According to an article from The Washington Post, about 1.7 million rear-end collisions occur in the United States every year. These are the most common type of vehicle accident in the nation, leading to 1,700 deaths and 500,000 injuries annually. The National Transportation Safety Board estimates that 80 percent of these collisions could be avoided with collision-avoidance systems, like emergency braking systems, available today on many types of vehicles.
