Bus Driver at Universityof Georgia Cited After Hitting Student

October 01, 2018

GA- According to, the driver of a University of Georgia bus was cited after an incident that took place on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. The police report indicates that the driver hit a female student who was crossing Tate in a crosswalk. The student was walking towards the journalism building, and the bus was turning from Hooper Street. The driver slowed down, and the student started to cross. However, the bus then continued to move.*

The student tried to back out of the way of the bus and was hit in her hand. Surveillance footage of the accident led the police to determine that the bus driver was to blame for the incident. UGA sent the driver home following the accident. Reports now indicate that the police have issued two citations for failing to stop at a stop sign, and for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

The student was not taken to the hospital, but she stated that following the accident, her hand was “stiff and swollen,” and “her back was tight.”

While the accident only resulted in minor injuries, it serves as a reminder of how vulnerable pedestrians are on the road. Georgia has the county’s 16th highest rate of pedestrian fatalities. Across the United States, more than 6,000 pedestrians died in accidents involving motor vehicles each year for the past two years.

Georgia is making an effort to reduce its high number of pedestrian deaths through a combination of efforts.

Nationally, the percentage of traffic-related victims made up by pedestrians has increased. While pedestrians made up 11 percent of total motor-vehicle related fatalities a few years ago, the percentage rose to 16 percent.
