Authorities Release Name of Man Killed in Interstate 65 Semi Truck Crash

October 01, 2018

CLARK COUNTY, IN- reports that a semi-truck overturned on a ramp in Indiana killing a man from Georgia. The Indiana State Police released a statement saying that the crash took place at 5:13 p.m. on September 27, 2018. The truck was traveling on westbound I-265 and towards southbound I-65 when the steel the truck was transporting shifted.*

The truck rolled over, and the driver. 64-year-old Roger L. Cole, of Gainsville Georgia, tragically died in the crash.

The accident led to the closure of the ramp for around five hours while the scene was cleared.

Every year hundreds of truck drivers die in rollover crashes. Rollovers can be deadly both for truck occupants and for other vehicle occupants who happen to be sharing the roadway with a massive rolling vehicle. While truck rollovers only make up about 3.3 percent of truck crashes, they cause more than 50 percent of all truck driver fatalities. The number one cause of death for on the job truck drivers is crashes.

The causes of these accidents are a combination of driver mistakes and old and outdated highway systems. Many times, drivers crash because they are sleepy, overworked, or distracted. But other times, highway ramps and other infrastructure arenot designed with large trucks in mind, and these vehicles become incredibly difficult to maneuver around the curves. Many of the curves are more than 40 years old and were not made to account for the banking needs of modern trucks.

One of the most dangerous areas for truck driver rollovers is in Atlanta where over 200 trucks have been in rollover crashes since 2001. The most dangerous spots are typically exit ramps that require vehicles to slow down rapidly.
