Driver in Custody After Crash In Decatur, Georgia, Injures Child

October 01, 2018

DECATUR, GA- Patch.com reports that a child sustained critical injuriesin a collision in Decatur on Thursday, September 27, 2018. The reports indicate that a vehicle traveling on Midway Road hit two other vehicles at a traffic light. The driver of the vehicle that hit the other two vehicles attacked a DeKalb officer. Police arrested the woman and assisted the people injured in another vehicle, including the five-year-old child, who was not responsive.*

A MARTA officer and some bystanders assisted in performing CPR on the child prior to the arrival of emergency medical services. The child and the parent were both transported to the hospital. The child is in critical condition. The parent was released after being treated for moderate injuries.

The driver who struck the other vehicles was also taken to the hospital.

The crash led to the closure of the street while police carried out an investigation.

Rear-end collisions are common in the United States. In fact, there are around 1.7 million rear-end crashes every year and 17,000 people die in these collisions. However, as more technological advancements are developed in the automotive industry, these collisions are becoming preventable. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), about 80 percent of rear-end crashes could be prevented by currently existing technology. Crash prevention technology, including systems that automatically apply the brakes, are already included in many vehicles, and NTSB recommends that this technology should come standard in all vehicles. Christopher A. Hart, the NTSB Chairman, stated that this sort of lifesaving technology should not cost extra and should be viewed the same way that seat belts are, stating “you don’t pay extra for your seat belt.”
