School Bus and Large Truck Collide in Cartersville, Georgia

September 30, 2018

CARTERSVILLE, GA- The daily-tribune.com reports that a school bus from Bartow County crashed with a truck on Wednesday afternoon at about 4:15 p.m. The collision took place on Red Top Mountain Road. Alisha Evans, a spokesperson for the school, confirmed that one of the buses was involved in a collision with a truck, but did not know how many students were on the bus when the crash took place.*

No information was provided about the driver of the truck. The road was shut down because of the crash. Two other school buses were stuck because of the roadway was closed. The school sent additional buses to take the children home because the drivers were kept at the scene and were held there until Georgia State Troopers were able to release them.

No information was provided about the driver. The report indicates that none of the students on the bus were injured in the crash.

School bus accidents often grab headlines, but these vehicles are generally considered the safest on the road. School buses are equipped with “flashing lights, giant mirrors, high seat backs” and are painted bright yellow to ensure that they are highly visible. Statistically, students are more likely to make it to and from school safely on a bus than they are either traveling in a car or walking to school.

Despite all of the safety features, around 30 school children are killed in school transportation-related accidents in the United States every year. The buses are made to be safe for passengers, so the fatalities are more often the result of buses hitting students who are walking outside the vehicle, or buses colliding with other smaller vehicles in which children are traveling.
