Student From Whale Branch High School Killed in Rollover Crash in Burton

September 30, 2018

BURTON, SC- writes that a teenager was killed in a collision in Beaufort County on Tuesday, September 25, 2018. The victim was identified as Kevin Morazan, 17. Morazan was a student at the Whale Branch High School.*

Morazan was driving on Bruce K Smalls with three other students as passengers in the vehicle when he lost control and veered off the roadand into a mailbox. Morazan then attempted to overcorrect the vehicle which caused it to roll overmultiple times.

Morazan and another student sitting in the front seat were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Both front seat occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Morazan was pronounced dead at the scene. The other student who was ejected suffered severe injuries and was transported to MUSC via airlift.

The backseat passengers both had their seatbelts on. One of the passengers traveling in the back seat sustained minor injuries. The other was not hurt.

Officials stated that seatbelts are important and save lives.

Morazan was described as a popular sophomore. He played on the soccer team, was in JROTC, and was the Warrior Mascot at the high school football games.

Rollover accidents are extremely dangerous and often deadly types of collisions. One report released bythe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicated that rollovers account for more than one-thirdof all traffic deaths. In 69 percent of those deaths, the victim was not using a seatbelt. The importance of wearing a seatbelt can be illustrated by pointing out that in 2016, seatbelts saved14,668 lives.
