Study Indicates that Lawnmowers Cause Thousands of Injuries Every Year

September 29, 2018 reports that a study found that lawnmowers present a risk to many Americans every year there are about 6,400 injuries reported and many of the injuries lead to hospitalization and in some cases, surgery. The study was carried out by the John Hopkins University School of Medicine.*

The United States Nationwide Emergency Department Sample is a large database that keeps information about accidentsand looked at around 25-30 million emergency room visits, which is about 20 percent of the overall visits seen annually.

The study found that from 2006 to 2013, about 6,394 people sustained lawnmower-related injuries each year. The trips to the emergency room came with an average price tag of $37,000.

The most common injuries found were “lacerations, fractures, andamputations and involved the wrist, hand, foot or toe.” The vast majority of people injured were men. Men accounted for about 85 percent of all lawnmower accident.

The data collected indicates that these injuries are still a serious health concern in the United Statesand that the warning labels and consumer education programs are failing to reduce the number of serious accidents. The study will help create better prevention policies and could be useful to engineers who are trying to design safer machines.

Children often sustain injuries from lawnmowers as well. Between 1990 and 2014, 212,258 children were treated in emergency rooms for injuries resulting from lawn mowers. The number of injuries has declined over theyears because of better safety features, but additional improvements are clearly needed. It is possible that future lawn mowers will be capable of detecting human flesh and stopping quickly and automatically when they do.
