Pennsylvania School Bus Accident injures Multiple Students

September 26, 2018

MARS, PA- reports that a school bus went off of the road in Mars on Monday, September 24, 2018. The bus which was carrying about 40 middle school and high school students went over an embankment in a stretch of Route 228 that has been under construction for months. The bus reportedly struck a barrier, veered off the roadway and over a hillbefore ending up on its side.*

Six students sustained injuries in the crash.

The construction is being done to improve highway safety. The state is putting in bike lanes, new turn lanes and upgrading the signals and drainage system. The project is expected to be completed byMay of 2020.

The accident marks the second time in a matter of months that a school bus has been involved in a crash on the same stretch of road. Last July a school bus that had no students on it at the time, crashed nearby sending the driver to the hospital.

Monday’s crash was reported to the students’ parents through an automated voicemail. The parents of the injured students were contacted by the school.

In addition to the injured children, some were taken to medical facilities as a precaution.

Children who were not injured in the crash were brought to a local CVS on Route 228 to be picked up by their parents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that school buses are the safest vehicles on the road. School bus safety standards are far more stringent than the standards for other passenger buses. The chances of children arriving safely at their destination are greater on a school bus than they are when driving in a car.
