Monday Crash in Fulton Injures One in Callaway County

September 26, 2018

CALLAWAY COUNTY- The fultonsun.com reports that a woman sustained injuries in a collision on Monday, September 24, 2018. The victim, 21-year-old Savannah Evans, was traveling west on U.S. 54 close to County Road 209 when the accident occurred.*

Reports indicate that Evans made a sudden lane change to avoid a collision with another vehicle. When she overcorrected her 2003 Saturn L200, it went off the roadway where it hit a rock and rolled over.

Evans, who was wearing her seatbelt when the crash occurred, was transported to the Fulton Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries.

Rollover crashes are terrifying and frequently deadly. Rollovers only account for a small percentage of crashes in the United States, but they make up more than a third of all trafficaccident-relateddeaths. Many rollover deaths could be prevented if people always wore their seatbelts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that69 percent of all people killed in rollover crashes were not wearing their seatbelts when they crashed. The failure to buckle up likely contributed to many of those fatalities. In 2016, estimates indicate that 14,668 people were probably saved by their seatbeltsand that 2,456 more people would likely have lived through crashes if they had been using a restraint.

The good news is that more people arenow buckling up. The NHTSA reported that as of 2016, over 90percent of all Americans used their seatbelts. While the number varies by state, it is a clear indication that seatbelt use has been improving over the decades. In 1984, only 14 percent of people used seat belts.
