September 26, 2018

CLEVELAND, OH- Wsbradio.com reports that a tour bus hit an elderly man in Cleveland on Monday, September 24, 2018. The bus was carrying Gary Numan, the British musician. The bus was turning right when it hit the victim in a crosswalk.*

Numan was scheduled to perform at the House of Blues in Cleveland on Monday night, but the show was canceledfollowing the crash. Numan expressed his devastation on Twitter.

Numan’s band Tubeway Army was popular in the 1980s. The singer now resides in California where he continues to write music.

Every year in the United States, thousands of pedestrians are killed in accidents. In 2016, 5,987 pedestrians died in accidents involving motor vehicles. The number indicates an increase in pedestrian fatalities over 2015 when there were 5,495 pedestrian fatalities.

Across the United States, many cities are taking pedestrian safety more seriously and are taking steps to make the roadways safer for both pedestrians and cyclists. In 2018, City Councilmen in Cleveland presented an emergency resolution to bring a Vision Zero program to the city. Vision Zero initiatives have been started in other major U.S. cities in recent years. In New York, one of the first cities to adopt Vision Zero, pedestrian deaths have reached an all-time low.

Vision Zero’s goal is not to have a single traffic death. The program works under the assumption that all traffic deaths can be prevented. The program requires a collaborative effort between “local traffic planners and engineers, police officers, policymakers, and public health professionals” because it requires, among other things, better-designed roads, lowered speed limits, enforcement of moving violations, better technology.
