Georgia Trooper Smashes into Home In Midst of Car Chase in Winder, Georgia

September 26, 2018

WINDER, GA- reports that a man was almost killed in the home he is renting when a police car drove into the house. The man was sitting on his front porch on Friday, September 21, 2018,when a Georgia State Trooper drove onto the street in pursuit of a suspect. When the trooper attempted to hit the person he was pursuing, he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the residence.*

Steve Wilhelm, the man renting the house, stated that the whole incident occurred very quickly. Wilhelm entered his home, and the car went right through the front of the house. The dent the police car left in the wall can be seen in photos.

Wilhelm’s wife was in the home at the time as well, and both were unharmed by the vehicle.

Wilhelm says it’s the closest call he’s ever had in his life and described the incident as “terrifying.”

The Georgia State Police have yet to explain the circumstances leading up to the wreck. The reason the officer was chasing the suspect or why the chase led to Wilhelm’s neighborhood remain unanswered. Reports indicate that the suspect was apprehended following the collision, but Wilhelm maintains that the accident should have been avoided. The street Wilhelm lives on is in a residential subdivision, and Wilhelm pointed out that children play in the area. He believes that the officer should have stopped the pursuit when it put people in the area at risk.

Between 1979 and 2013, over 5,000 passengers and bystanders were killed in police chases in the United States. Most bystanders who are killed in chases are in their own vehicles when the car chase leads to a crash.
