Smyrna Man Killed in Marietta, Georgia Car Accident

September 26, 2018

MARIETTA, Ga. — A Smyrna man lost his life in a violent automobile accident on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, in Marietta. According to the Smyrna Patch, the fatal collision took place around 1:15 in the afternoon. Cobb County police initiated an investigation into the reasons why the crash occurred. The Cobb County police investigators have not reached a conclusion, and the case remains under investigation.*

The deceased man, 51-year-old Michael Dorsey, a resident of Smyrna, tragically died when the motorcycle on which he rode collided with a Chevrolet Corvette. Cobb County police identified Patrick Durbin, 59 and also a resident of Smyrna, as the operator of the sports car that crashed with the motorcycle rider.

Cobb County police investigators released preliminary details regarding the accident. Police said that Mr. Dorsey was riding his red 2008 Sym motorcycle easterly on Church Road in the area of Tammy Lynn Drive just before the collision. Mr. Durbin, meanwhile, drove his 1994 white Corvette westerly on Church Road, in the direction of Harris Road. Cobb County police say that the Corvette crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the motorcycle.

The investigating officers stated that they found Mr. Dorsey deceased at the scene of the crash. Mr. Durbin experienced minor injuries in the collision. They did not say whether Mr. Dorsey wore a helmet while riding.

Police began investigating why the driver of the Corvette veered into the oncoming lane of traffic. Furthermore, the officers did not say whether they would charge Mr. Durbin with any criminal offenses at this time.  Their investigation continues and may take some time to complete.

According to the Georgia Governor's Office on Highway Safety, 173 motorcyclists died in Georgia in 2016. That office expects 263 people to die in motorcycle crashes in 2018 based on the percentage increase in fatalities each year since 2013.
