Multi-Car Crash Causes Injuries in Columbus, Georgia

September 26, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Columbus police officers, along with Columbus Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene of a three-car accident on Wynnton Road and 18th Avenue. According to wtvm.com, the pile-up happened on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at approximately 1:20 p.m. Columbus police re-routed traffic from the area so they could attend to the wounded and clear debris from the accident site.  Police have not indicated if charges would be filed.*

The Columbus police officers assigned to investigate the accident have released very few details about the crash. As of Saturday, police had not announced a cause of the accident, the number of injuries, except to say that multiple people were hurt, and had not identified anyone involved in the auto accident.  Columbus Police, Fire, and EMS issued a joint statement on Twitter stating that an accident did occur and the intersection of Wynnot Road and 18th Avenue will be closed for some time. The Twitter announcement suggested to people traveling toward that vicinity to seek alternative routes to avoid tie-ups caused by the crash.

Video footage shot of the crash site offers some detail about the accident. The video shows two sedans and a small sports utility vehicle all with significant damage. The video depicts one older-model sedan with massive damage to the driver's side front quarter. Notably, the driver's front wheel of that car appears to be snapped inward from the axle. The other two vehicles seem to have collided head-on and show significant damage to the front of each car, as expected. Airbags were deployed in the vehicles equipped with that safety feature.

The configuration of the car is complicated to describe The older sedan is in a travel lane by itself. The SUV struck a blue-colored Volkswagen sedan traveling in the opposite direction of the older-model sedan. The SUV is at an angle to the blue car. The scene gives the appearance that the operator of the SUV hit the older car in a t-bone collision and then spun into the other lane, colliding head-on with the Volkswagen.
