Three-Truck Collision in California Leaves One Seriously Injured

September 22, 2018

SONORA, CA. – September 17, 2018 ( As reported online by, a collision involving three trucks September 14 in Sonora, California, left one person seriously injured.*

At approximately 8 p.m. on September 14, 22-year-old Savannah McNeil, of Tuolumme, California, was driving a 2005 Ford 500 westbound on Tuolumme Road in Sonora. Near the area of Morris Road, McNeil slowed to turn left into a private drive, and a 2014 Toyota Tacoma rear-ended her vehicle at about 40 mph. The force of the impact sent McNeil’s vehicle sideways and into the eastbound lanes of the roadway, where she crashed head-on into a 2005 GMC Sierra.

A 27-year-old passenger in McNeil’s vehicle, who has not been identified, was transported to Adventist Health Sonora with reportedly minor injuries. The driver of the Tacoma, 21-year-old Joseph Davis, of Sonora, was seriously injured and airlifted from the scene to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, California. It does not appear McNeil or the driver of the Sierra, 50-year-old Louis Mendez, of Los Banos, California, were injured.

Authorities say all people involved were wearing seat belts. They do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the initial collision.

According to an article from The Washington Post, about 1.7 million rear-end collisions occur in the United States every year. These are the most common type of vehicle accident in the nation, leading to 1,700 deaths and 500,000 injuries annually. The National Transportation Safety Board estimates that 80 percent of these collisions could be avoided with collision-avoidance systems, like emergency braking systems, available today on many types of vehicles. The NTSB has been encouraging car manufacturers to make these systems standard in all vehicles.
