Man Struck and Killed After Truck Breaks Down on Wyoming Interstate

September 22, 2018

CHEYENNE, WY. – September 18, 2018 (thenewstribune.com) According to an online news report from thenewstribune.com, a man whose truck broke down on a Wyoming interstate September 13 was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.*

At approximately 8 p.m. on September 13, 42-year-old Stephen Anderson, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, ran out of gas in his pickup truck on Interstate 25. He parked in a construction zone on the interstate about 11 miles south of Glendo, Wyoming, and attempted to flag someone down for help. A vehicle traveling northbound on I-25 struck and killed Anderson as he was standing in the roadway.

Wyoming authorities say Anderson was wearing dark-colored clothing and likely did not realize he was standing in the northbound lane of travel at the time. They say he had become distracted by someone exiting the interstate in front of his truck. The driver of the vehicle has not been identified. It is not clear whether any charges will be filed. Local authorities are investigating and have not yet released additional information.

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States.

On a state level, Wyoming’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were well above the national ranges population-wise. The state’s individual data shows 19.1 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.17 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
