Two People Hospitalized in Crash at Georgia Elementary School

RICHMOND COUNTY, GA. – September 19, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, two people were hospitalized September 19 after a vehicle wreck in Richmond County, Georgia, that ended with a driver crashing into an elementary school.*

The collision occurred on Tobacco Road and Gracewood Drive, near an elementary school. A Toyota traveling eastbound on Tobacco Road reportedly ran into another Toyota that was pulling out from Gracewood Drive. Upon impact, first Toyota ran off the road and crashed into the elementary school. 

Authorities say school was in session at the time, but no children were injured. Neither of the drivers has been identified. Two people were transported to a local hospital with injuries, but it is not clear which vehicle they were inside. The extent of their injuries is not known. 

Richmond County is located on the eastern border of the state of Georgia and includes Augusta, Georgia. In 1995, the City of Augusta consolidated governments with Richmond County, forming one entity known as Augusta-Richmond County. The county has an estimated population of 202,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 20, Interstate 520, U.S. Route 1, U.S. Route 25, U.S. Route 78, and U.S. Route 278. 

During the five-year period between 2012 and 2016, vehicle accidents in Richmond County increased dramatically, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 333 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. This number increased significantly in 2013 to 1,315 then leaped to 8,879 in 2014. By 2016, the total number of accidents in Richmond County was 9,957. 

Interestingly, while the total number of accidents increased through these years, the number of fatal accidents fell. The 2012 collisions led to 40 fatalities, while the 2016 collisions led to 17 fatalities.
