Tractor-Trailer Wreck Shuts Down Highway 301 in Claxton, Georgia

September 23, 2018

CLAXTON, GA – September 19, 2018 (claxtonenterprise.com) A collision involving a tractor-trailer September 14 resulted in blocked traffic on Highway 301 in Claxton, Georgia, for approximately three hours, according to an online news report from claxtonenterprise.com.*

On September 14, a tractor-trailer carrying an oversized load of road equipment was traveling northbound on Highway 301 in Claxton. Near the Claxton-Evans Airport, the tractor-trailer collided with a long-bed dump truck, causing the tractor-trailer to overturn across the northbound lanes of the highway.

Neither driver has been identified, and neither was injured. All four lanes of Highway 301 were shut down for about three hours after the collision. The equipment in the tractor-trailer weighed 100,000 pounds and required several tow trucks to lift off the roadway. It is not yet clear how the accident occurred. Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

In 2016, 179 people died on Georgia roads in accidents involving a bus or a large truck. When these accidents occur, due to their scale, several lanes of the interstate have to be shut down, and gridlock ensues throughout the area. Aside from the traffic backups, these accidents are known for causing serious injuries and fatalities.

During the week of August 6, 2018, as part of a Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative, law enforcement officers in Georgia targeted dangerous drivers on several interstates in the state. In total, the officers issued 932 citations. Almost 600 of these citations were for left lane violations. In Georgia, it is illegal for large trucks and buses to drive in the left lane. In addition to lane violations, 12 of the citations were for violations of the Georgia Hands-Free Law, and nine were for speeding.
