Georgia Man Dies in Four-Vehicle Collision on South Carolina Interstate
ANDERSON COUNTY, SC. – September 18, 2018 (independentmail.com) A man from Georgia tragically died and a teenager was critically injured September 18 in a four-vehicle collision in South Carolina, according to an online news story from independentmail.com.*
At approximately 7:30 a.m. on September 18, a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles, including two tractor-trailers, occurred on Interstate 85 North in Anderson County, South Carolina. As two tractor-trailers crested a hill on the interstate near mile marker 6, the drivers slammed on their brakes. This caused two additional tractor-trailers behind them to rapidly brake. Two vehicles behind the second set of tractor-trailers, a pickup truck and an SUV, could not stop in time, and they crashed into the back of the tractor-trailers.
It is not clear what caused the first two tractor-trailers to brake suddenly. Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the sun might have played a role in the collision. All of the drivers might have had poor visibility because of the rising sun, and the two vehicles behind the second set of tractor-trailers were unable to see what was happening further up the road. The first set of tractor-trailers kept driving down the interstate, likely not realizing a collision had occurred behind them. Neither of these trucks was struck by another vehicle.
The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. He has been identified as a 50-year-old man from Lavonia, Georgia. A teenager in the SUV was critically injured and airlifted from the scene to Greenville Memorial Hospital. The teen has not been identified, and his or her injuries are said to be life-threatening. The driver of the SUV and the drivers of the tractor-trailers involved were not injured. None of them has been identified at this time.
South Carolina authorities are investigating the accident and have not released additional information at this time.
