Police Officer Pulls Woman From Burning Car in Cobb County, Georgia

September 24, 2018

MARIETTA, GA. – September 20, 2018 ( A Cobb County police officer responded to the scene of a vehicle accident September 5 and pulled a victim from a burning vehicle, according to an online news report from*

At approximately 8 p.m. on September 5, officer Oscar Escarcega, of the Cobb County Police Department, responded to a call about a vehicle crash on South Cobb Drive and Gym Road in Marietta, Georgia. Escarcega and his partner arrived to find a vehicle off the roadway in a wooded area that had caught on fire. A witness at the scene — a Dobbins Air Force Service Member who jumped a barbed wire fence at the base to get to the wreck — told officers he saw a woman inside the vehicle.

Crews heard screams inside the vehicle that suddenly stopped as the smoke became heavier. Marietta firefighters moved to the other side of the vehicle and yelled they could see someone in the passenger’s side of the car. That’s when Escarcega jumped to action.

He scaled a concrete barrier and ran toward the car. The vehicle was engulfed in flames as firefighters finally pried the door open, and Escarcega reached in without hesitation and pulled the woman out of the burning car. He then carried her to safety on the other side of the concrete barrier, where she received on-site medical attention. She was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

The woman has not been identified and is reportedly still recovering in the burn unit at Grady Memorial. She suffered severe burns from the fire, and her current medical condition is not known. It is not clear how the accident occurred.
