Georgia Doctor’s Airplane Crashes at Tri-Cities Airport

September 24, 2018

BLOUNTVILLE, TN. – September 19, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a small experimental plane registered to a Georgia doctor crashed September 19 at the Tri-Cities Airport in Tennessee.*

At approximately 6:15 p.m. a Velocity experimental amateur-built aircraft departed from Columbus, Georgia, carrying two people. The plane was registered to Richard Knapp, of Seale, Alabama, who is a doctor at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Knapp was on the plane, as was an unidentified person.

Approximately two hours later, the plane crashed about 500 feet short of a runway at the Tri-Cities Airport. A witness said he heard the plane sputter and saw it hit the ground and flip over. Airport officials say Knapp and the second person in the plane were both conscious and moving when emergency response arrived. Crews sprayed the plane with foam to prevent a fire and helped the occupants out of the plane. Both were transported to Holston Valley Hospital for evaluation. Their current conditions are not known.

Runway 23 at the airport was closed until about 10 p.m. to allow crews to clear the scene. Commercial flights were minimally impacted during this time, according to airport officials. Officials also reported the Federal Aviation Administration instrument landing system lights on the runway sustained some damage. The amount of damage is not yet known.

The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation into the incident. It is not yet clear what caused the plane to crash.  No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
