Thomas County, GA, Business Owners to Drivers: Slow Down

September 25, 2018

THOMAS COUNTY, GA. – September 19, 2018 (wctv.com) An article online from wctv.com discusses Thomas County, Georgia, business owners’ reactions to a recent fatal collision on U.S. 319.*

After a string of collisions killing pedestrians, business owners off of U.S. 319 are trying to get a message to drivers: slow down. The latest collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on September 18. Authorities say 42-year-old David Newman was riding or walking beside a bicycle on northbound U.S. 319 when an SUV struck him near Herbert Lane in Thomas County. Newman’s bicycle became caught underneath the SUV after the impact, and Newman died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, 21-year-old Anthony Massey, was reportedly not injured. It is not yet clear to investigators whether Newman was on the bike or was walking near it when the crash occurred. They do not yet understand how the two came to collide.

Owner of Premium Automotive and Scooter Repair Justin Long says he has watched several accidents occur near his business on this highway. “People need to slow down,” Long said. “There’s a lot of houses around here and businesses where people are constantly pulling out of. I see them every day, people walking back and forth from that store or riding bicycles.”

Long says he hopes the speed limit on the road is reduced or more law enforcement officers start to patrol the area. “It’s the best thing that can happen for this highway, or the same thing is going to happen over and over again,” he said.

Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the collision that killed Newman. No additional information is available at this time.
