MASSEY UPDATE: Driver Identified in Thomas County Wreck that Killed Bicyclist

September 20, 2018

THOMAS COUNTY, GA. – September 19, 2018 (wctv.tv) According to an online news story from walb.com, authorities have now identified the driver who struck and killed a bicyclist September 18 in Thomas County, Georgia.*

The collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on September 18. Authorities say 42-year-old David Newman was riding or walking beside a bicycle on northbound U.S. 319 when an SUV struck him near Herbert Lane in Thomas County. Newman’s bicycle became caught underneath the SUV after the impact, and Newman sadly perished at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was apparently not injured. The driver has now been identified as 21-year-old Anthony Massey. Massey was reportedly driving a white Chevrolet Equinox at the time.

It is not yet clear to investigators whether Newman was on the bike or was walking near it when the crash occurred. They do not yet understand how the two came to collide on the highway. Blood samples were taken from both Newman and Massey, though officials have reported they have no reason to believe Massey was impaired at the time of the crash.

It is not known at this time whether charges will be filed. The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team with Georgia State Patrol is investigating and has not released additional information at this time.

Captain Steve Jones with the Thomas County Sherriff’s Office says the speed limit on U.S. 319 is 55 mph, and there are no bike lanes on the highway. Therefore, riding a bicycle on the road is dangerous, he said. For safety purposes, if bicyclists choose to ride on U.S. 319, Jones said they should be sure to wear brightly colored clothing and affix proper reflectors to their bikes.
