Authorities Identify Bicyclist Killed in Thomas County, GA, Crash

THOMAS COUNTY, GA. – September 19, 2018 ( According to an online news story from, authorities have now identified the bicyclist who was struck and killed by a vehicle September 18 in Thomas County, Georgia.*

The collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on September 18. Authorities say 42-year-old David Newman was riding a bicycle north on U.S. 319 when an SUV struck him near Herbert Lane in Thomas County. Newman’s bicycle became caught underneath the SUV after the impact, and Newman died at the scene. The driver of the SUV, who has still not been identified, was apparently not injured. 

“the front right side of the vehicle struck the pedestrian and the bike,” said James Miller, assistant post commander for Georgia State Patrol. “It’s still under investigation if the bike was in the road or on the side of the road, or if the vehicle swerved onto the shoulder. That’s still under investigation by our SCRT team.” 

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team with Georgia State Patrol is investigating and has not released additional information at this time. 

According to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accident numbers in Thomas County have varied during the last several years. In 2012, a total of 1,406 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. That number steadily dropped during the next three years, coming down to 935 total vehicle accidents in 2015. In 2016, however, the number of accidents in Thomas County jumped back up to 1,497. These accidents led to 398 injuries.

During a five-year period between 2012 and 2016, the highest number of fatal vehicle accidents occurred in 2016, when 10 people died in motor vehicle crashes. Two of the fatal accidents that year were related to excessive speeding.
