Lawrenceville Police Arrest U-Haul Driver Involved in Fatal Pedestrian Crash

September 19, 2018

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. – September 17, 2018 ( Police in Lawrenceville, Georgia, have arrested the U-Haul driver involved in a fatal pedestrian crash September 10. The story is reported online at*

At approximately 3:45 p.m. on September 10, a small U-Haul drove off the roadway on Johnson Road near Daniel Lane in Lawrenceville. According to Lawrenceville Police Department Sgt. Chris Ralston, the U-Haul then struck a pedestrian walking down the sidewalk, traveled back onto the roadway, and continued driving. The pedestrian, 79-year-old Tran Hong, died from her injuries.

A neighbor in the area, Ron Spears, said he heard the crash and ran out to check on Hong. He knew Hong from her frequent walks in the neighborhood, he said. “Everyone down through here knows her, and she waves, and we wave,” Spears said.

Spears checked Hong’s pulse, he said, and found that she was deceased. He then brought out a blanket from his home and covered her. Spears, a military veteran, said the incident reminded him of war. He was astounded that the driver left the scene. “Why? Why wouldn’t you stop?” Spears asked. “I mean, that’s it. It’s so simple. That’s a human being.”

Following the accident, police were searching for the missing U-Haul and driver and asking for help from the public. On September 17, they arrested 51-year-old Leonard Decouto, of Lawrenceville, in connection with the incident. He is being charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run, and failure to maintain a lane.

It is still not clear why Decouto left the roadway. No statements or information from U-Haul regarding the incident have been reported at this time.
