Ludowici Police Chief, Motorcyclist Killed in High-Speed Chase

September 18, 2018

LIBERTY COUNTY, GA. – September 16, 2018 (wsav.com) According to an online news report from wsav.com, the police chief of Ludowici, Georgia, and a motorcyclist were struck and killed September 15 during a high-speed police chase.*

At approximately 7 p.m. on September 15, a sheriff’s deputy in Liberty County, Georgia, attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Daniel Hill. When the deputy attempted to stop Hill on Leroy Coffer Highway, Hill sped away. This started a high-speed chase involving multiple officers that reached speeds of close to 100 mph.

The chase continued through Liberty County and into Long County, with officers from local law enforcement departments assisting in directing and stopping traffic along the way. Ludowici Police Chief Frank McClelland Jr. drove to the route of the chase and got out of his patrol vehicle on Highway 84 to stop traffic. Hill came speeding by and struck McClellan with his vehicle. Hill then lost control of the vehicle and struck a motorcyclist, 61-year-old Marvin Pope.

Hill’s vehicle kept going some distance, then crashed into a vacuum cleaner near the gas pumps at the Flash Flood service station on Highway 84. Both McClellan and Pope died at the scene. Hill was arrested and charged with two counts of murder, vehicular homicide, and driving under the influence.

It is not clear why Hill was originally stopped or why he fled from the deputy. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and no additional information has been released at this time.
