Two Killed in Effingham County, GA, Vehicle Crash

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GA. – September 15, 2018 (savannahnow.com) As reported online by savannahnow.com, two people were tragically killed September 14 in a vehicle accident in Effingham County, Georgia.*

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on September 14, Nathaniel Johnson, of Clyo, Georgia, was driving a Dodge Caliber southbound on Old Augusta Road South in Effingham County. For unknown reasons, Johnson’s vehicle left the roadway near the Lake Cherie trailer park. Johnson then overcorrected, driving back onto the roadway and into the path of a Ford Flex. The two vehicles then collided. 

Johnson and a passenger in his Dodge, Sandra Raife, of Savannah, Georgia, were trapped in the Dodge, which caught on fire after the collision. Emergency crews extinguished the fire and freed the two, but they died at the scene. The driver of the Ford, who has only been identified as a woman from Rincon, Georgia, was seriously injured in the crash and transported to Memorial Hospital. Her current medical condition is not known. 

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, Effingham EMS, and the Rincon Fire Department responded to the scene. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident and has not yet released additional information. 

Effingham County is located on the eastern border of the state of Georgia. It has an estimated population of 59,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 16, Interstate 95, and U.S. Route 80. 

Vehicle accidents have increased in Effingham County during the last several years, according to crash information compiled by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 430 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. This number decreased slightly in 2013 before taking a sharp turn upward in 2014. Accidents in Effingham County totaled 1,038 in 2014, then climbed steadily, reaching 1,360 in 2016. The 2016 accidents led to 308 injuries and 12 fatalities.
