DeKalb Authorities Arrest Suspect in Fatal Vehicle Crash

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – September 16, 2018 ( According to an online article from, authorities in DeKalb County, Georgia, have arrested a suspect in the case of a fatal vehicle crash that took place September 2.*

On September 2, according to arrest warrants, 30-year-old Jaron Donnay Hester, of Union City, Georgia, fled police in DeKalb County after a traffic stop. In fleeing officers, he drove in excess of 100 mph in a 55 mph zone and crashed his vehicle at Interstate 85 and North Druid Hills Road in Decatur, Georgia. Hester and a passenger in his vehicle, Jazmin Jeanty (age and city not reported), were transported to Grady Hospital for treatment. Jeanty died of her injuries. 

Arrest warrants for Hester say he was driving recklessly and attempting to elude law enforcement. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit arrested Hester on or about September 16. He has been charged with felony murder, false imprisonment, driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and reckless driving. No additional information has been released at this time.  

DeKalb County is located in the north-central part of the state of Georgia. It has an estimated population of 753,000, and its county seat is Decatur. The county’s major roadways include Interstate 20, Interstate 85, Interstate 285, and Interstate 675. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in DeKalb County have more than doubled in the last several years. In 2012, a total of 15,743 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 3,775 injuries and 76 deaths. By 2016, those numbers jumped significantly, rising to 39,383 total accidents, 10,158 injuries, and 80 deaths. Almost half of the fatal vehicle accidents in DeKalb County in 2016 were related to either alcohol (20 accidents) or excessive speeding (17 accidents).
