Georgia State Patrol Still Searching for Driver Involved in August Pedestrian Crash

September 19, 2018

NEWTON COUNTY, GA. – September 14, 2018 (ajc.com) According to an online news report from ajc.com, the Georgia State Patrol is still searching for the driver involved in a fatal pedestrian crash August 18 in Newton County, Georgia.*

In the early morning hours of August 18, 52-year-old Patricia Ann McGuire, of Covington, Georgia, was on Hazelbrand Road in Covington. She was walking, standing, sitting, or lying in the roadway near McMahan Road when a vehicle traveling eastbound on Hazelbrand Road struck her. The driver of the vehicle did not stop, and McGuire died of her injuries at the scene.

Authorities have little information about the vehicle involved. They believe it was a truck, SUV, van, or “other vehicle with high ground clearance.” They do not know the make, model, or color. Georgia State Patrol is asking for the public’s help in solving this case. Anyone with information about the vehicle or driver involved is encouraged to call the Georgia State Patrol Troop E Communications Center at (706) 210-2050.

According to an article from NPR, pedestrian fatalities in the United States are a significant problem. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.

Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.
