Atlanta Police Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash
ATLANTA, GA. – September 15, 2018 (wsbtv.com) According to an online news story from wsbtv.com, authorities in Atlanta, Georgia, are investigating what they believe was a hit-and-run crash. The crash occurred September 14 and caused the death of a female pedestrian.*
The crash reportedly occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on September 14 on Moreland Avenue and Custer Avenue in southeast Atlanta. An unknown vehicle struck and tragically killed 40-year-old Dondrill Tye as she was walking in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle left the scene.
No information has yet been released regarding the vehicle involved, and Atlanta Police are actively looking for the missing driver. Tye’s family is hoping someone with information about the crash will come forward and speak to police, according to another news report.
Atlanta is located in Fulton County and extends partially into DeKalb County, Georgia. Fulton County has a large population — estimated at more than 1 million — and has vehicle accident numbers to match. In 2016, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, nearly 61,000 vehicle accidents occurred in Fulton County. These vehicle accidents led to 12,875 injuries and 129 deaths. Of the fatal collisions that occurred in Fulton County in 2016, 41 involved pedestrians.
During the five-year period between 2012 and 2016, Fulton County had a major jump in vehicle collisions. In 2012, a total of 22,275 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 4,498 injuries and 77 deaths. Sixteen of these fatal accidents involved pedestrians. By 2015, the number of accidents had grown well above 50,000, with fatality accidents reaching above 100 and fatal pedestrian accidents climbing to 28.
