BEDFORD COUNTY, VA. – September 14, 2018 (wdbj7.com) According to an online news report from wdbj7.com, a September 14 train collision at a Georgia-Pacific plant property in Bedford County, Virginia, claimed the life of one man.*

Virginia State Police report the collision occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. on September 14. A 2012 freightliner tractor-trailer was reportedly parked improperly across a set of railroad tracks on the Georgia-Pacific plant property on Riverside Circle in Bedford County. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 39-year-old Alberto Columbie, of Daleville, Virginia, was outside of the vehicle at the time the train began approaching and realized the tractor-trailer was in the way.

Columbie got back into the tractor-trailer to try to move it off of the tracks but then realized he did not have enough time. He jumped out of the truck as the train passed, and the train crashed into the passenger’s side of the tractor-trailer. Columbie was caught in the collision and pinned underneath the truck. He reportedly died of his injuries at the scene.

It is not clear what company Columbie was working for at the time of the accident or why he was parked across the tracks. The owner of the train and rail was not identified. Virginia State Police are investigating the collision and have not released additional information.
