Cobb County Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Accident

COBB COUNTY, GA. – September 16, 2018 (patch.com) As reported online by patch.com, police in Cobb County, Georgia, are investigating a September 15 collision that caused the death of a pedestrian.*

At approximately 6:15 p.m. on September 15, a black 2009 Toyota Yaris was traveling east on South Cobb Drive. Near the area of Appleton Drive, the Yaris struck 64-year-old Clarence E. Martin, of Marietta, Georgia, as he was attempting to cross South Cobb Drive. Martin reportedly walked out in front of the Yaris. It is not clear if he was inside a crosswalk. 

Martin was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he died of his injuries. The driver of the Yaris, 38-year-old Chimere D. Spraggins, of Marietta, was not injured in the collision. He stayed at the scene and spoke with police.

Cobb County Police are continuing to investigate the collision and have not yet released additional information. It is not clear whether any charges will be filed.

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Cobb County is the site of numerous vehicle accidents each year, with an increase in these accidents occurring during the span of several years. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety collected data on accidents in the county from 2012 to 2016. In 2012, a total of 11,767 vehicle accidents occurred in Cobb County, leading to 2,860 injuries and 47 deaths. 

By 2016, those numbers had increased to 34,985 total accidents, 8,470 injuries, and 59 deaths. During both 2012 and 2016, more than half of the fatality accidents in Cobb County were related to speeding or alcohol consumption.
