One Injured in South Carolina Chain-Reaction Crash Involving Five Ambulances
GREENVILLE, SC. – September 12, 2018 (ems1.com) According to an online news report from ems1.com, five ambulances driving from Atlanta, Georgia, were involved in a chain-reaction collision September 12 in South Carolina.*
The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on September 12 on Interstate 85 in Greenville County, South Carolina. Five ambulances were traveling from Atlanta to aid in hurricane efforts in the Carolinas. Near mile marker 51, four of the ambulances slowed for normal traffic conditions. The fifth ambulance, however, failed to slow and crashed into the back of the fourth ambulance. This caused a chain-reaction crash involving all five ambulances.
The driver of the fourth ambulance was transported to an area hospital with reportedly minor injuries. No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Four of the ambulances had to be towed from the scene. Reports indicate the ambulances did not have an exact location for their destination but were “commonly controlled” from the North Dakota/Minnesota area and departed from Atlanta before the crash. Several lanes on the interstate closed following the accident to allow crews to clear the scene. It does not appear any other vehicles except the ambulances were involved in the collision.
Hurricane Florence made landfall in the Carolinas in the early morning hours of Friday, September 14. Extreme winds and prolonged heavy rain are expected to make many coastal areas of North and South Carolina uninhabitable for several weeks or even months. Meteorologists have been emphasizing the size and strength of Florence, urging everyone in the path to evacuate. Emergency responders have been traveling to the area this week in preparation for the devastating effects of the storm.
