Tractor-Trailer Wreck Shuts Down I-85 North in Fulton County, GA

FULTON COUNTY, GA. – September 10, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a vehicle wreck involving a tractor-trailer shut down Interstate 85 in Fulton County, Georgia, September 10. The lane closures resulted in major delays for rush-hour commuters.*

Authorities reported a wreck involving multiple vehicles near the area of Interstate 285 on I-85 North at about 8 a.m. on September 10. As a result of the crash, a tractor-trailer overturned across all lanes of northbound traffic, blocking everything but the left shoulder. Due to the crash and subsequent lane closures, traffic was at a standstill for commuters in south Fulton County. Drivers trying to get to work at the start of their week were extremely delayed. 

The roadway reopened about 3 hours later, around 11 a.m., but traffic continued to be backed up to Senoia Road. Drivers were encouraged to take U.S. 29 during the morning hours to avoid the crash. At this time, no information has been reported about the cause of the crash, the number of vehicles involved, or whether any injuries occurred. None of the drivers involved has been identified. 

Fulton County has an estimated population of more than 1 million. In 2016, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, nearly 61,000 vehicle accidents occurred in Fulton County. These vehicle accidents led to 12,875 injuries and 129 deaths. 

During the five-year period between 2012 and 2016, Fulton County saw a significant increase in vehicle collisions. In 2012, a total of 22,275 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 4,498 injuries and 77 deaths. By 2015, the number of accidents had grown well above 50,000, with fatality accidents reaching above 100.
