Vehicle Fire Blocks Traffic in Douglas, Paulding Counties

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA. – September 11, 2018 (patch.com) A wreck and resulting vehicle fire on Interstate 20 caused major traffic delays September 11 in Douglas and Paulding counties in Georgia. The story is reported online at patch.com.*

The accident occurred in the afternoon on September 11 on I-20 West, near Lee Road. It is not clear how the accident occurred or how many vehicles were involved. A fire ignited after the crash, which caused fire departments to respond to the scene. Fire crews shut down all lanes of I-20 West to put out the fire, which caused major traffic delays in both Douglas County and Pauling County.

During this time, drivers were encouraged to use Martin Luther King Jr Drive as an alternate route. The number of people involved was not reported, and it is not clear whether any injuries resulted from the crash. No additional information is available at this time. 

According to an article from the National Fire Protection Association, between 2003 and 2007, fire departments throughout the United States responded to almost 290,000 vehicle fires each year. These fires caused annual averages of 480 deaths, 1,525 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. On average, 31 highway vehicle fires were reported every hour during this time period. 

Ninety-three percent of reported vehicle fires and 92 percent of vehicle fire fatalities involve highway vehicles, such as cars, trucks, buses, RVs, and motorcycles. Highway vehicle fires accounted for 17 percent of reported fires nationally from 2003 to 2007, 12 percent of fire deaths, 8 percent of civilian fire injuries, and 9 percent of property damage from reported fires.
