Pedestrian Hit by Train in Bakersfield, California

September 13, 2018

BAKERSFIELD, CA. – September 6, 2018 (bakersfieldnow.com) According to an online news report from bakersfieldnow.com, a pedestrian suffered serious injuries August 29 after being hit by a train in Bakersfield, California.*

The collision occurred late in the evening on August 29, near the intersection of White Lane and Hughes Lane in Bakersfield. A pedestrian on the train tracks was reportedly struck by a train. The person, who has not been identified, suffered major injuries, according to the police watch commander. His or her current medical condition is not known.

It is not clear how the accident occurred or what company owned the train involved. No additional information about the incident has been reported at this time.

Reports estimate about 2,000 people in the United States are killed every year in incidents involving grade crossing or trespassing on railroad property. According to an article by USA Today, when a car or person is on a set of railroad tracks, railroad officials say little can be done aside from blaring a train’s horn. By the time a train is close enough to see someone on the tracks, the heavy locomotive cannot be stopped in time to avoid a collision.

Not only do these types of accidents cause devastating harm to the victims, but the engineers and train operators involved also often suffer from nightmares, depression, and social isolation. The federal government has implemented regulations for workers involved in fatal or injury-causing train accidents. The Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 requires railroads to offer time off to employees who were involved in deadly accidents on train tracks.
