Pedestrian Killed in South Carolina Vehicle Crash

September 15, 2018

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC. – September 10, 2018 (wtoc.com) According to an online news story from wtoc.com, a pedestrian was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle September 10 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina.*

The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. on September 10. A vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 95 in Orangeburg County struck an unidentified pedestrian walking down the roadway. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified, was not injured. It is not yet clear if charges will be filed against him or her in connection with the accident. South Carolina authorities are investigating and have not released additional information at this time.

According to an article from NPR, pedestrian fatalities in the United States are a significant problem. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the perpetual increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.

While the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says increases in pedestrian fatalities appear to be slowing, too many people are dying in these types of accidents every year. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.
