Truck Falls Off I-85 Overpass in Alabama; Driver Seriously Injured

OPELIKA, AL. – September 10, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a pickup truck fell off an Interstate 85 overpass in Opelika, Alabama, September 10 and crashed onto the street below.*

At approximately 10 a.m. on September 10, a 1997 Nissan pickup truck was traveling southbound on I-85 in Opelika. At the South Long Street overpass, the truck left the roadway and fell off the overpass onto Long Street below. The truck landed on its roof, and the driver was seriously injured when emergency crews arrived.

The driver, who has not been identified at this time, was airlifted to Piedmont Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia. His current medical condition is not known. 

Opelika Police Department Capt. Bobby Kilgore said the crash involved just the Nissan truck, and the driver was the only occupant of the truck. Authorities are not sure how or why the truck fell off the overpass, Kilgore said. There was no apparent damage to the bridge or the roadway. The truck was totaled in the crash, and the wreck caused traffic on Long Street to back up for several hours. The road reopened around noon on September 10. 

Alabama authorities are continuing to investigate the collision and have not released additional information at this time.

The data for Alabama shows a rate of 21.3 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.49 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled. These rates were well above the national averages in 2016, which were 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled.
