Semi-Truck Hits Guardrail Near Georgia-Tennessee Line

September 15, 2018

MARION COUNTY, TN. – September 10, 2018 (newschannel9.com) According to an online news story from newschannel9.com, a semi-truck hit a guardrail and overturned September 10 in Marion County, Tennessee, near the Georgia state line.*

The crash occurred on Interstate 24 East at mile marker 166, near the Interstate 59 split. Tennessee police said the driver of a semi-truck on I-24 lost control and hit a guardrail. The truck then traveled off the roadway and flipped onto its roof. The wreck caused the right lane of I-24 East to be closed for several hours. Authorities did not indicate whether the driver or anyone else was injured in the crash. It is not clear what caused the semi-truck driver to lose control of the vehicle.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States has the highest rate of vehicle crash deaths among high-income countries in the world. The fatal crash rates in the U.S. are highest when measured both by population (10.3 deaths per every 100,000 people) and by registered vehicles (1.24 deaths per every 10,000 registered vehicles). The U.S. also has the fifth-highest rate of motor vehicle deaths based on miles traveled (1.10 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled).

Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety provides information about the fatality rate in vehicle collisions in the state of Tennessee in 2016. The data for Tennessee shows a rate of 15.7 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.34 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled. These rates were above the national averages in 2016, which were 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled.
