New Express Toll Lanes Open in Atlanta Sept. 8

September 06, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – September 6, 2018 (wtvm.com) New express toll lanes will open September 8 in the Atlanta area, giving drivers the opportunity to coast through heavy traffic, according to an online news story from wtvm.com.*

The Northwest Express toll entails 30 miles of new express lanes in Cobb County and Cherokee County and will be open to drivers who buy a Peach Pass transponder. The lanes run southbound along Interstate 75 toward Atlanta during the morning rush hour and northbound during the evening rush hour. Midday HERO units will patrol the express lanes and clear any debris or stalled vehicles to keep things running smoothly.

“It will give you that reliable trip time, so you know exactly what you are buying,” said Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson Natalie Dale. “So you either pay with your time in the general purpose lane during rush hour, or you pay the toll by using the express lane system.”

The lanes will have a shoulder for drivers to pull off in the event of a stall or other issue. Fire, police, and EMS crews in the state have also been trained on operating within the express lanes. “There are nine emergency access vehicle points where they can access the system to gain quick to an accident in the system,” Dale said.

At the debut of the express lanes, travel will be free for use by Peach Pass holders. After two weeks, the toll prices will go into effect and will be charged based on lane usage. Tolls prices will be higher during periods of heavy use. For more information about the express lanes and how to register for a Peach Pass, go to the Georgia DOT’s website.
