Alabama Teen Able to Speak for First Time Since Serious Car Accident

September 12, 2018

MOBILE, AL. – September 6, 2018 ( An Alabama teenager who was involved in a serious vehicle accident several months ago has spoken his first words since the crash. The story is online at*

In May 2018, 16-year-old Anthony Lafrenier, of Mobile, Alabama, was involved in a vehicle accident with a Wave Transit bus. He suffered a broken back, broken pelvis, perforated bowel, and traumatic brain injury. Since the accident, he has been fighting for recovery, and he reached a big milestone on August 30.

That day, he spoke for the first time since the crash. His mother, Beth Jones, was there to hear. “Still very, very whispery, still unsure what he’s saying, but it’s an achievement that he can do that because some people never regain that,” Jones said.

Lafrenier is currently at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where his mom and dad have been traveling back and forth from Mobile to be with him. “We’ve rented an apartment there,” Jones said. “We alternate days there when we can be off work. We’ve gone through all our vacation, sick, and all our leave time, but we’re still making it work.”

Jones explained that while the recent milestone is extraordinary, Lafrenier still has a long way to travel in his recovery. “He’s got to relearn to walk, to talk, to eat, even to sit up correctly. That’s all things he has to learn to do,” she said. Nevertheless, the family is grateful. “I’m thankful he’s still with us,” Jones said. “It could have been so much worse. I’m thankful we still have Anthony, and he has a chance to recover and fight.”
