Wreck on I-85 Ties Up Traffic Near Georgia-Alabama Line

OPELIKA, AL. – September 6, 2018 (wtvm.com) According to an online news report from wtvm.com, a wreck on Interstate 85 tied up traffic near the Georgia-Alabama line on September 6.*

The crash occurred at approximately 6 a.m. and affected the morning rush hour for commuters on September 6. The site of the wreck was Interstate 85 North and exit 58 in Opelika, Alabama, near Tiger Town. The cause and nature of the accident were not reported. The number of vehicles and people involved were also not reported, nor was any information regarding injuries. 

Alabama authorities are investigating and have not released additional information. Drivers were encouraged to take alternate routes to avoid the area. 

Opelika is less than 30 miles from Columbus, Georgia, and Muscogee County. Interstate 185 is a major roadway within Muscogee County, as are U.S. Route 27, U.S. Route 80, and U.S. Route 280. 

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Muscogee County sees a large number of vehicle accidents each year. In 2016, a total of 8,299 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, which led to 1,659 injuries and 27 deaths. This was the highest rate of fatal accidents in the county during a five-year period (the next-highest was 20 fatal accidents in 2012). Five of the fatal accidents in 2016 involved pedestrians, and six involved motorcyclists. 

Typically, about half of the fatality accidents in Muscogee County are related to alcohol consumption or speeding. The highest numbers of accidents in the county tend to occur during the spring and summer months.
