Muscogee County School District Named in Lawsuit for 2016 Bus Crash

September 09, 2018

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA. – September 5, 2018 ( As reported online by, the Muscogee County School District has been named in a lawsuit filed by the parents of three children injured in a 2016 school bus crash.*

The crash occurred on August 22, 2016. The driver of the bus, 67-year-old Roy Newman, was allegedly running late after his bus broke down and driving a replacement bus along his route. Shortly before 8 a.m., the bus ran off Garrett Road, near the intersection with Jackson Road in Columbus, Georgia, and crashed into a tree head-on. Newman died in the crash. Seven students from Mathews Elementary School on the bus were injured and transported to nearby hospitals. One student had to be airlifted.

Evidence from the subsequent investigation, including video footage from inside the bus, shows Newman speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving the bus with one hand while holding a drink in between his legs. When the bus left the roadway, Newman fell out of his seat and was allegedly unable to apply the brakes or appropriately steer the bus so as to avoid the crash. Investigators found no evidence of drugs or alcohol in Newman’s system or of any medical impairments interfering with his driving abilities that day.

The lawsuit is pending in Muscogee County Superior Court against the Muscogee County School District, Superintendent David Lewis, the Estate of Roy Newman, and undisclosed John Doe defendants who were responsible for maintenance and repair of the school buses. The suit alleges “severe physical, mental, emotional and monetary injuries” and seeks more than $3 million in damages.
