23-Year-Old Man Killed After Being Hit by Vehicle on I-85 in Georgia

BRASELTON, GA. – September 5, 2018 ( A 23-year-old man was killed September 4 after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 85 in Braselton, Georgia, according to an online news report from*

Georgia State Patrol indicates 23-year-old Stephen MacGregor Norris, of Cumming, Georgia, was parked in the emergency lane on I-85 South, near mile marker 130. Norris got out of his vehicle and was struck by a southbound truck. It is not clear why Norris had pulled over or why he got out of his vehicle. 

It is also not clear if the driver of the truck stayed at the scene. The driver has not been identified. Traffic was backed up for several hours in the area while crews cleared the scene. The situation was further complicated by another vehicle accident that occurred nearby. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident and has not released additional details at this time. 

Braselton is situated such that it is actually located in four counties in the state of Georgia: Barrow, Gwinnett, Hall, and Jackson. It is located about 53 miles northeast of Atlanta and has an estimated population of about 10,000. 

Numerous vehicle accidents occur in the counties that make up Braselton. For instance, in Gwinnett County, according to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, tens of thousands of accidents occur every year. In 2012, nearly 29,000 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, resulting in injuries to 6,418 people and the deaths of 45 people. Accident figures rose steadily during the next four years. In 2016, a total of 41,527 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 9,436 injuries and 61 deaths.
