Fatal Labor Day Wrecks Double in Georgia by Montlick & Associates

GEORGIA – September 4, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, the number of fatal vehicle wrecks during Labor Day weekend doubled in Georgia during 2018.*

During the Labor Day weekend this year, 18 people died in vehicle crashes in the state of Georgia, per a report from the Georgia Department of Public Safety. This is exactly double the number of fatal crashes that occurred in Georgia during Labor Day weekend in 2017. 

In 2018, nine fatal crashes took place in the Atlanta metro area — three in Union City, two in Cobb County, one in Clayton County, one in Forest Park, and one elsewhere in the metro. Nine additional fatality accidents occurred around the state, including in Cartersville, Dalton, Gainesville, Griffin, Hartwell, Perry, and Villa Rica. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office investigated three fatal wrecks during the holiday weekend. 

In addition to fatal vehicle wrecks, law enforcement officers responded to increased numbers of DUI incidents and other types of crashes during Labor Day 2018, compared to the prior year. Troopers with Georgia State Patrol investigated 446 crashes total and arrested 332 people for driving under the influence. In 2017, Troopers investigated 398 crashes and arrested 248 for driving under the influence. 

In 2016, according to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the state of Georgia’s vehicle fatality rates averaged 15.1 deaths per every 100,000 people and 1.29 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled. Nationally, fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people in 2016 and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled.
