September 06, 2018

RICHMOND COUNTY, GA. – September 5, 2018 (officer.com) According to an online news report from officer.com, a Richmond County Sheriff’s deputy was injured September 4 after crashing his vehicle during a high-speed chase.*

A news release from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Wesley Stallings was driving east on U.S. Highway 1 in pursuit of a fleeing suspect. He crested the hill at Greg’s Gas Plus station and hit a wet patch of roadway. Stallings lost control trying to navigate a curve in the road and hit the curb, then entered the median and struck a tree. Stallings’s vehicle then continued on, crossing the eastbound lanes of the highway, leaving the road, traveling over an embankment, and finally coming to a stop in the parking lot of a garage.

Stallings sustained broken bones during the crash and was transported to Augusta University Medical Center, where he is expected to undergo surgery. His recovery will likely take several months, officials said.

It is not clear whether the suspect Stallings was pursuing was later apprehended or was able to escape. No information has been reported about this suspect. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Richmond County Sheriff’s office are investigating the case and have not yet released additional information.

According to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, general purpose state and local law enforcement agencies conducted an estimated 68,000 vehicle pursuits in 2012. During 2012, local police conducted eight vehicle pursuits per every 100 officers employed. Sheriff’s offices conducted 9 pursuits per every 100 officers employed. Between 1996 and 2015, an average of 355 people were killed each year in pursuit-related crashes. This averaged to about one person a day.
