Families Trying to Piece Together Events of Union City Wrong-Way Crash

September 06, 2018

UNION CITY, GA. – September 4, 2018 (wsbtv.com) The family members of the people involved in a Labor Day fatal wrong-way crash in Union City, Georgia, are looking for answers. According to an online news story from wsbtv.com, they are having trouble piecing together what happened.*

In the early morning hours of September 3, at approximately 1:45 a.m., 56-year-old Kathy Stevens was driving a Camaro on South Fulton Parkway in Union City. A Lexus driving in the wrong direction on South Fulton Parkway crashed into the front end of the Camaro at a high rate of speed.

Stevens had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she died of her injuries. A passenger in her vehicle, 55-year-old Michael Fullwood, died on the scene. The driver of the Lexus, Kennis Harrell (age not reported) also died at the scene. Harrell was reportedly a former DeKalb County firefighter and EMT.

Fullwood’s daughter, Micah, is trying to find answers about what happened to her father. “It’s sad it has to be this way,” she said. “I just want justice for him and anybody who’s been in a situation similar to this. I just want to say I miss my dad.”

Likewise, Harrell’s family members are searching for explanations. Harrell’s aunt, Kenya Simmons, said she believed Harrell was confused driving home from a Labor Day gathering and did not know he had turned onto the wrong side of the road. She also offered her condolences to the families of the other victims.

“We want you to know that we have you in our prayers,” Simmons said. “We can honor each individual’s memory by advocating for more street lighting on this stretch of highway … road signage and even road indicators.”
