Semi-Truck, Greyhound Bus Collide Head-On in New Mexico; Seven People Killed

September 04, 2018

NEW MEXICO – August 30, 2018 (npr.org) A head-on collision between a semi-truck and a Greyhound bus in New Mexico has claimed the lives of seven people and injured many more, according to an online news report from npr.org.*

The collision occurred in the afternoon on August 30 on Interstate 40, about 100 miles from Albuquerque, New Mexico. A semi-truck traveling eastbound on I-40 reportedly blew a tire, and the driver lost control. The semi-truck veered across the center median of the roadway and into the westbound lanes of travel, striking a Greyhound passenger bus head-on.

Video from the scene shows the semi-truck overturned across the median and spread across both westbound lanes of I-40. Its contents are littered about the interstate. The bus is shown with a huge hole in the front end. A total of 49 passengers were on the bus, not including the driver, according to a statement from Greyhound. The bus was traveling from Albuquerque to Phoenix, Arizona, then to Los Angeles, California.

Seven people are confirmed dead at this time, and dozens more are injured. None of the people involved has been identified, and no current medical conditions have been reported.

In a statement, Greyhound spokesperson Crystal Booker told NPR, “Our first priority is taking care of our passengers and their families, as this incident has deeply impacted all involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone as we continue to give our support to all affected.”

Authorities are investigating the collision and have not yet released additional information to the public.
